FAQ and Therapy
1. What is the difference between Counselling and Psychotherapy?
Counselling tends to deal more with immediate issues that may have arisen more recently e.g. bereavement or relationship breakdown. Psychotherapy tends to deal with deeper, more long- term issues that may be rooted in the past e.g. a trauma, or, serious mistreatment where the effects of such are ongoing
2. What happens on the first session?
During your first session, the therapist usually takes care of the "housekeeping" this means they will cover the basics like time keeping, cancelling a scheduled session and no shows. They will also talk about why it is important that you have privacy for the session. It is also the therapists responsibility to inform their clients in relation to the limits of confidentiality, including statutory reporting obligations with regard to child protection issues. A therapist will only break confidentiality where required by law, or where there are grounds for believing that clients will cause harm to themselves or others
3. How many sessions will I need to attend?
This very much depends on the complexity of the issue or issues. Your therapist will discuss this with you. It is not uncommon for people to attend 1 or 2 sessions, likewise some people attend therapy each week for many many months, even years.
